who we are

Celebrating 33 Years of Design Excellence

Starting a new architectural firm in 1976 was a daring move. The U.S. was emerging slowly from the 1973 oil crisis and a two year economic recession. There was political indecision as we waited to see who would win the presidential election, Gerald Ford or Jimmy Carter. Buildings were getting bigger and bolder, like the John Hancock Tower and the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, both completed in 1976.

But Mike Gorman and Scott Richardson were young, excited about design and the possibilities that lay ahead. With a great leap of faith, they began what would prove to be a substantial firm built on creative problem solving and architectural and technical excellence.

Gorman and Richardson exhibited great foresight even in the early days. They understood the importance of clear communication and innovative design. They made the strategic decision to stay in the heart of MetroWest Massachusetts, uniquely positioned to serve all of New England. They embraced the concept of partnering – fostering collaboration from a project’s inception with clients, engineers, and builders. And they integrated the latest in sustainable design ideas (in those days it meant embracing passive solar heating and cooling), staying on the cutting edge of “green” initiatives.

Gorman Richardson Lewis Architects has evolved into that rare architectural firm – a group of dedicated professionals with great design talent, deep technical knowledge, and a commitment to providing responsive service.
